  • David shared from Listening to Your Life: Daily Meditations with Frederick Buechne by Frederick Buechner
Listen to your life. See it for the fathomless mystery that it is. In the boredom and pain of it no less than in the excitement and gladness: touch, taste, smell your way to the holy and hidden heart of it because in the last analysis all moments are key moments, and life itself is grace.
  • David shared from Yours Is the Day, Lord, Yours Is the Night: A Morning and Evening Prayer Book by David P. Gushee
Beloved Jesus, may I have the faith and insight of the Wise Men, who, when faced with an ancient hope of a foreign people and the appearance of a remarkable star, grasped the connection, and went and followed that star. I stand now at the border of a new year, which is to me like an unknown country. I don’t know what I will experience as I traverse it; I don’t know what obstacles will lie across my path. Lead me, like the Wise Men, on a quest of faithfulness and worship, of hopefulness and giving, and always unto Yourself. Amen. —JEANIE GUSHEE (1962–)

The power of a believing community can do wonders in how we wait in hope. A community helps us discern how God calls us and speaks into our lives, keeping us accountable to spiritual integrity and affirming or challenging our discernment as necessary. It is important to have people with whom we can prayerfully share our spiritual journeys and who can help us name the new realities that God might be birthing in our lives. A community can support us as we name these new realities and learn to live into our expanding or changing sense of identity as flourishing children of God.

Communing God, in your wisdom and provision you invite us to journey alongside one another. Grant us wisdom and discernment to seek out and cultivate spaces of deepening holy imaginations where we can wait expectantly for you and with one another.

God who created from nothing all that we see around us, Enter the searching places of our hearts, Search us, convict us, change us. God who invites us to draw from the wellsprings of life, Come into the dry and thirsty places of our lives, Fill us, transform us, dwell within us. God who extends to us the unforced rhythms of your grace, Open within us a place where you can dwell, Restore us, refresh us, renew us. As we seek to move close to you during this Advent season, May our searching hearts expand our understanding of you, Live in us, love through us, glorify yourself.
