    De journalistiek waarin ik geloof is per definitie meerduidig, meerstemmig en kakofonisch. Ze presenteert geen waarheid, maar laat zien dat er vele waarheden, zelfs tegengestelde waarheden naast elkaar kunnen bestaan. In essentie draait ze om inzicht en begrip, niet om oordelen.

    Toen in 1959 een sollicitant bij de Los Angeles Times een baan in de buitenlandse verslaggeving ambieerde, antwoordde Kyle Palmer, de grote baas op dat moment: ‘Luister, we hebben daarvoor al één man, in Zwitserland, die ons veertigduizend dollar per jaar kost en geen enkele advertentie binnenhaalt.’ Daarmee was de wereld buiten de Verenigde Staten wel voldoende gedekt.
