    Paradoxically, a self-centered self cannot become more complex, because all the psychic energy at its disposal is invested in fulfilling its current goals, instead of learning about new ones.
    Note: Focus on the self, taken to extremes, holds it back.

    what people enjoy is not the sense of being in control, but the sense of exercising control in difficult situations. It is not possible to experience a feeling of control unless one is willing to give up the safety of protective routines. Only when a doubtful outcome is at stake, and one is able to influence that outcome, can a person really know whether she is in control.
    Note: To feel that you're in control, you have to go beyond what you know you can do. Enjoying "Flow."

    If we have to believe with 100 percent certainty that every action we take will be flawless, then we are doomed to stasis. But by building systems that are themselves alive, we can deal with crises as they arise.
