    For a widow must not be seen to enjoy food; all her meals for the one-year mourning period must be made without any salt or pepper. And I know I am lucky; it is a lot better than yam and unspiced palm oil. Plus, I get to eat with a spoon. In some villages, my mother-in-law drummed into me, a mourning widow only eats with two long sticks. Whatever food she drops belongs to the spirits; it’s her husband’s share.
