those who have never been involved in cults or cult-like groups assume that a lack of intelligence or an overabundance of gullibility leads people to join totalitarian groups. This is simply false. Very intelligent people become involved in destructive religious groups and/or false teachings. Those who are perhaps most vulnerable are people looking for answers to life’s difficult questions

Bill Gothard has not merely adopted a “fringe” position on the Law; he clearly falls outside most of historic evangelicalism, having gone much further than Theonomists.

To focus on matters of health and hygiene or to interpret Mosaic ceremonies as moral requirements, is to lose the prophetic function of those laws as pointing to Christ and to risk removing Christ from the core of the Bible. Paul’s teaching, “Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Christ.” (Colossians 2:17; cf. Hebrews 10:1), recedes into the background. Keeping ceremonial requirements becomes the main thing, and one ends up trading the substance for the shadow.
