Note: One of the biggest challenges of nonfiction writing is the opening. Reality is messy and sprawling. The challenge is to extract the story, and the opening to the story is its most critical component. So I always study the opening to a nonfiction book. This opening is outstanding--a lesson for all nonficiton writers.
Note: What a lovely sentence. "Efferfescent" what an unexpected and yet perfectly apt word. And the verb "sliced" gives it a disquieting overtone.
They bent their bodies in the water
Note: Another great verb, "bent".
It was a huge, heavy rush, suggesting immensity, a great parting of air.
Note: Another sentence to make a fellow writer envious.
