I say all this to make a simple point: we can’t overcome evil (or sin, for that matter) if we dare not name it.
By itself, naming evil is as close to useless as an activity gets. The other half of our job is to overcome evil, the evil we’ve dared to name, with deep enduring good. This is the church’s real calling. This is the deeper and harder half of our job. This is what makes the church different from everything else in the world, or is supposed to.
